Amazing Grace, Over the Rainbow and Memories are Made of This are just a few of the songs residents are fond of in the 'I Love Music' programme at Oceania Healthcare centres across the country.
Atawhai Retirement Village in Napier has seen six residents aged 65 to 96 choose their own personalised playlist on their iPod.
Activities Co-ordinator at Atawhai Retirement Village, Barbara Cordery, said the programme was "a way to connect residents with the meaningful tunes of their younger years by providing them with an iPod loaded with their own unique music playlist - available to them night and day."
"They are really enjoying learning to use the new technology and we are having lots of fun stories and emotional moments with them. Residents with health problems have really enjoyed this new outlet as a change to have something special of their own," Ms Cordery said.
She said it had proven health benefits for elderly people living with depression, anxiety and dementia.
Resident Gillian Perry said she was "really enjoying being part of the programme" and listened to her iPod all the time.
In September, Oceania Healthcare, claimed the Supreme Award for Overall Excellence in Aged Care for the third consecutive year at the NZ Aged Care Association Excellence in Care Awards.
