Smiles, chocolate kisses and floral displays were the order of the day when residents and staff of Gracelands celebrated their Friendship Day with a long lunch at the aged care facility recently.
The volunteers are the true heroes,” says the centre’s diversional therapist, Viv Harrison.
“They are very special people who give up their time to help others—from taking a resident for a wheelchair wander, helping them to play bingo, reminiscing and spending quality time chatting. These are just a few of the activities they provideand I have to say the delight this brings to our Gracelands family is wonderful.”
Viv says a group of residents help the activities team in the home, including Kay Tall who “lovingly makes her beautiful cards” for visiting entertainers and looking after in-house cat Maggie, as well as Keeni Priestley who helps set up for activity sessions. Viv says she is always willing to go that extra mile for others.
Regular theme days are held at Gracelands—this month’s theme was friendship. “With that in mind we invited our wonderful volunteers to a long lunch,” Viv says. The dining room was set with white tablecloths, friendship placemats with inspirational quotes. Floral displays made by residents were used as centre pieces and gift bags decorated by“craft fairies” full of chocolate kisses delighted the volunteers, Viv says.
“Crystal, our wonderful cook, made a fantastic meal which received rave reviews from everyone. “Our volunteers and residents were encouraged to mix and mingle and sit with someone new and enjoy the company of others while being entertained by the talented Peter Scott.”
