Members of the community including the local Kaumatua and Kapa Haka group came to Gracelands for a Powhiri
Friendship and belonging was the theme carried by a powhiri hosted last month by Gracelands Lifestyle Care and Village and facilitated by Maori Health Services.
“This was a cultural exchange between local kaumatua and our residents — it was a beautiful warm day and that warmth was carried in by our guests,” says Gracelands diversional therapist Viv Harrison.
“Our very own kaumatua and resident Mihi Edwards did a wonderful job as our host. The very talented kapa haka group from Atawhai, joined by Gracelands staff, performed wonderful selections of beautiful waiata.” Songs and stories were shared, there was dancing and “we even learnt a few new actions.”
Following introductions, there was a chance to mingle and re-establish some old connections and develop new ones. “We all shared a wonderful lunch and talked further."
"This very successful exchange was about continuing to grow our strong sense of community and family here at Gracelands.”
