Our Care Offering
Our beautiful tree-lined driveway opens out to reveal a facility that is not quite what you’re expecting. What you see is one home that houses a very large family. It has been said the front of the building is reminiscent of an English country cottage, possibly due to the vines carpeting the walls of much of the building. Our family is not unlike most others - we have young and old family members and people pop in at regular intervals to care for those who are unable to care for themselves.
Our focus of care is independence. We encourage our residents to do for themselves what they can, while they can. Due to the large number of younger adults at this facility, we provide a service suitable for their age and stage in life. A fun environment is encouraged and we are one of the few facilities that has incorporated a resident buddy system for our younger residents. This means every new resident is teamed up with a resident who is familiar with the routines and the environment. It makes settling in so much easier.
There’s plenty to do for those who are in the mood for recreation. In the Otumarama common room, residents are encouraged to be as independent as possible. There is a computer workstation, TV lounge and dining room. The activities programme includes crafts, games and quizzes, exercise groups, live music, church services, guest speakers and scenic excursions, just to mention a few. Community pets include two cats, canaries and a tropical fish tank.
There’s a weekly happy hour and special get-togethers are organized for annual celebrations, such as Easter, Mid-Winter and Christmas.
What’s Near By
Otumarama has a primary school on one side, an intermediate on the other and is opposite a high school. This means many of our residents have grandchildren and great grandchildren close by, making visiting easy. The suburb of Stoke is a very close knit community and friends and families are often within walking distance. There is a small shopping centre within very easy walking distance and a larger one just a little further away. It’s not uncommon for the administrator to take a wheelchair resident shopping and to the local library. Nelson Central is approximately a 7 minute drive away.
